Windsong has been building homes for Active Adults for more than a dozen years (as Windsong, that is. Our team has been at this for a LOT longer than that!) and one of the things we hear most often is, “how am I going to fit all of my stuff in a smaller home?”
Let’s face it: moving is stressful. Don’t take our word for it. According to psychologists, it’s one of the most traumatic events we can do, even if it’s going to make our lives happier, healthier, and simpler.
While it’s possible to fit everything you had in your six-bedroom family home into your right-sized Windsong home, we don’t recommend it. We build each home so that the lifestyle becomes more important than the stuff.
Here are some ideas to not only help you survive your move, but thrive:
Have A Plan
Look around your existing home and consider which items are most important to you.
Using that inventory as a guide, which will most complement your new home and lifestyle?
The National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) is made up of individuals whose job it is to help you organize your existing space, prepare for a move, or establish organization processes in your new home or office. Make A List
Create a calendar that works from your moving date, backwards, and assign tasks to each day until everything is sorted and either packed, distributed, or discarded.
Figure Out/Keep What You Love
In her book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” author Marie Kondo recommends creating five piles of material possessions: clothing, books, papers, miscellaneous items, and sentimental items (such as photos), then holding each one to see if it brings you joy. (She suggests a “generous goodbye” to those things that do not provide pure joy).
Sort through clothing, linens, kitchen items, books, collectibles, etc., and ask yourself two questions: 1) when was the last time I used this item? And, 2) do I see myself using this in my new home?
Making the decision to right-size your home is not easy, but for folks who have visited a Windsong home “just to see what’s out there,” envisioning life in a luxury home surrounded by only the people and things that mean the most to them took away much of the worry and stress.
In fact, once the boxes are unpacked and homeowners begin to live in their homes, the realize that a luxury lifestyle is easier in a thoughtfully designed Windsong home!
