April is Stress Awareness Month. Yes, that’s a real thing, as if we don’t have enough awareness about stress in our lives already.
And if you think that being an Active Adult isn’t stressful (you’re retired, you’re downsizing, you’re pursuing the activities you always wanted to…), think again. Any change – even a positive one – has the potential to induce stress.
So here are a few tips from health and wellness experts to “celebrate” Stress Awareness Month:
Eat Healthy – “comfort food” is the snack or meal we reach for when we feel stressed-out. Unfortunately, this food group usually includes carbohydrates and sugars, which can make stress worse, as well as have an adverse effect on the body. Head-off stress with proteins (a handful of nuts, a hard-boiled egg, a wedge of cheese) – keep healthy options in the pantry! And incorporate rich flavors into the healthy meals (cook with olive oil, fragrant basil, etc.) prepared in your gourmet kitchen.
Exercise – it’s Spring in Atlanta. Pollen blizzards aside, this is the perfect season to take advantage of our temperate climate and take a stroll through the neighborhood on the wide sidewalks, or prepare the courtyard for a warm-weather vegetable or flower garden.
Plan A Play-Date – they’re not just for our grandchildren! A play-date can be as simple as a one-on-one lunch or coffee with a friend, or a group outing to a museum (or to Gibbs Gardens, which is trading yellow daffodil season for the pinks, purples, and reds of dogwoods, redbuds, and azaleas).
Write For Yourself – Gratitude Journals are not just a fad; they are recognized as effective tools for corralling stressful thoughts and focusing on what is positive – like great friends, nearby family, and a luxurious ranch home.
At Windsong, we do our best to alleviate stress, by maintaining lawns and common areas, offering exceptional, well-thought-out floor plans, and using high-quality products in every home we build. We even include front porches, that take the stress out of meeting your neighbors!
