Snowstorms, pollen, late freezes, extreme wind… Spring in Georgia has been a roller coaster ride that rivals anything Six Flags has introduced.
That collective sigh you hear right now is relief that Memorial Day – otherwise known as the Official Kickoff Weekend of Summer – is nigh, and with it comes a plethora of celebrations, events, and activities that will fulfill palates, eardrums, and activity calendars alike.
For those who enjoy the soulful rhythms of jazz, add the Atlanta Jazz Festival to your calendar this weekend! From Friday, May 23 through Sunday, May 25, Piedmont Park in Atlanta plays host to one of the largest FREE Jazz Festivals in the country, with performances by artists from across the genre on three stages: the Main Stage, International Stage and Locals Stage.
For directions and performance times, visit www.atlantafestivals.com.
Art enthusiasts will want to check out the annual Decatur Arts Festival, which features Theater & Literary Arts, New Dance, Performing Arts, Artist Market and a performance by the Decatur Civic Chorus over the Memorial Day weekend. Housed in venues throughout the square in Decatur, as well as a juried Fine Arts Exhibition at Agnes Scott College (just a few blocks from the square), the 2014 Decatur Arts Festival promises to dazzle the senses – and perhaps a few of your walls!
For directions and information, visit www.decaturartsfestival.com.
If you enjoy beer, wine and pandas, then perhaps Brew at the Zoo suits your fancy! On Sunday, May 25, Zoo Atlanta hosts a fundraising event that allows guests over the age of 21 to enjoy viewing the zoo’s 1,400 animals – including panda twins Mei Lun and Mei Huan – while sampling beer and wine, listening to live music, and channeling their inner child with free rides on the park’s train and carousel!
For ticket information and Brew at the Zoo hours, visit www.zooatlanta.org.
Of course, no Memorial Day would be complete without patriotic events, such as the Lasershow Spectacular and special extended salute to the troops fireworks finale at Stone Mountain Park. Visit www.stonemountainpark.com for more information.
Accessibility to travel routes make each of these destinations easy to visit throughout the weekend, while the private courtyards, great neighbors, and carefree living of each Windsong community makes simply staying home and grilling out feel like a celebration.
