After last week’s ice storm, we can thank our lucky stars that we have a warm place from which to view the Opening Ceremonies and events of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia (although, with advance forecasts of 47 degrees Farenheit in Sochi, this may turn out to be the warmest Winter Olympics on record!).
Symbols and Traditions
Six thousand athletes will compete, representing 85 countries (plus 1,650 Paralympians from 45 countries), making the 2014 Winter Olympics a tribute to the continuing legacy of a peaceful competition of individuals from around the globe.
But winning medals is only part of the story. The Motto of the Modern Games – Citius-Altius-Fortius – translates to “Faster-Higher-Stronger” – a dedication to bettering oneself, rather than simply being better than other athletes.
The five rings – an interconnected pattern of Blue, Black, Red, Gold, and Green – represent the five continents (The Americas are counted as one) in a “bringing together of the world.” Every participating country’s flag contains at least one of the ring’s colors.
The Olympic Flame was lit at the seat of the original games in Greece, a symbol that links the ancient games to the modern ones. White doves released after the cauldron is ignited symbolize peace (although white balloons often are used at the Winter Games, where temperatures may be too cold for the birds to survive).
The United States will send the largest athlete delegation in the history of the Winter Games, with 230 individuals representing our country in all of the 15 disciplines. The U.S. is expected to earn medals in 94 of the 98 events.
For 17 days, our country will share an excitement and sense of pride in the athletes who have trained to be the Fastest, Highest, and Strongest in their chosen sports.
