These days, it seems like everything we do has its own holiday – and some of the things we should do have a whole month to remind us to incorporate healthier habits into our routines.
Take breakfast, for example. Congress has declared September “All-American Breakfast Month,” in part to better prepare students to face their school day – studies conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information show students who eat breakfast enjoy increased academic performance and cognitive function.
But this first meal of the day has the potential to help all of us lead longer, healthier, more enjoyable lives.
Although a cup of coffee may provide the initial jolt that gets you going in the morning, eating breakfast has been shown to boost energy that helps propel us through the day.
And while people may think they’re saving calories when they skip breakfast, research indicates that skipping breakfast is one factor that contributes to obesity.
Consuming breakfast helps us be safer, too. Studies show that people who eat breakfast enjoy increased ability to concentrate and to learn new tasks, as well as improved memory function. Motivation and mood are enhanced, as well, in people who regularly partake of a morning meal.
Long-term benefits to eating breakfast are plentiful as well. The news magazine The Guardian reports the results of a 16-year study of men ages 45 and up, in which breakfast-eaters showed a 27% decrease in the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Additional studies indicate the results are similar for women.
The study concluded that consuming breakfast lowers risk factors associated with heart disease, including diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
