A zest for life is one of the most important examples a grandparent can pass on to their grandchildren. ~author unknown
Zest – what a wonderful word to describe a person of any age, but it is the best description for the modern grandparent – the generation of active adults and Boomers for whom the number of candles on their birthday cakes has no correlation to how much they enjoy their lives!
While we may feel young and “zestful” in our daily activities, spending a few hours (or even a few minutes) with a grandchild in this digital age can leave us feeling frustrated, drained and not as “hip” as we thought. So how can you connect with a grandchild who is “plugged-in”?
E-chat or Text. Because they have grown up with technology, your grandchildren are comfortable working with new applications and communicating with devices that existed only in the imagination or on the silver screen when we were their age. If you are not already “digitally fluent,” let your grandchildren help you learn to use the new digital tablet or smart phone application to keep in touch.
Listen. Every generation has its own language, and that of your grandchildren involves subjects you may never even have known existed. If it is interesting to them, take time to listen to what they have to say. Ask questions if you become confused. You’ll gain “cool factor” points if you listen to how they achieved the high score in the latest video game or found a great new recipe through social media.
Just be there. They are light years ahead of us in using technology, but we still have a lot to teach them. Share family photos, visit a museum, spend some time with them in your modern, spacious kitchen preparing a family recipe. Or plant flowers or harvest vegetables in the garden in your private courtyard.
In the words of former President Jimmy Carter: “Because (grandparents) are usually free to love and guide and befriend the young without having to take daily responsibility for them, they can often reach out past pride and fear of failure and close the space between generations.”
Each Windsong active retirement community was designed to help Boomers maintain their zest for life and enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, with private courtyards that invite gardening experiences, home designs and grandchild-friendly floor plans that maximize accessibility, minimize hassles and provide opportunities to enjoy an active lifestyle without sacrificing style or luxury.
