Sometimes it’s fun to go back to school. Helping take kids of all ages (and those who are more like kids at heart) into the gymnasium setting of a championship spelling bee is a production of the Tony Award-winning “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” Performed by a young faction of the Georgia Ensemble Theatre at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center—just 20 minutes from Windsong’s active retirement community in Woodstock—the play is a crowd favorite.
Based on a book by Rachel Sheinkin, the hilarious musical follows six overachieving young students as they vie for the win at the ultimate spelling bee match. Mentored by three quirky adults, the tale will have the audience in stitches as it teaches a lesson about winning versus losing.
In the auditorium, the spelling bee candidates will engage the audience as they step up to the microphone to tell stories and sing songs. At some parts, there’s even audience participation, so be prepared to jump out of your seat and get involved in the hilarity! Grandkids and kids will stay just as engaged as active adults, and everyone can test their spelling knowledge right along with the plot.
Whether or not you know how to use the word omphaloskeptic in a sentence, the Putnam County Spelling Bee is the place to have fun returning to your school days roots. Maybe you’ll even learn a little something!
