The reasons the homeowners at Somerset chose this community are as varied as the homeowners themselves. Today we invite you into the home of Tommy and Brenda Sommers to learn why they chose Somerset. See how Somerset made their “Life a Breeze” in this Active Adult Community.
Tommy and Brenda Somers were among the first homeowners in the Towne Lake community in Woodstock twenty years ago, when they built their two-story “dream home.”
“We were the fourth house in the four thousand acres,” Brenda says.
Last year, health problems forced the couple to seek a ranch style home. “I have a medical disability and I was in crisis mode,” Tommy says. “The doctor said I had to move out of the two-story home.”
“We put our house on the market and we started looking,” Brenda says. “We met (Lifestyle Consultant) Micki in April,” while visiting Windsong’s Somerset community for the first time.
Tommy and Brenda looked at several floor plans, and Tommy preferred the Drayton. They toured the community on “a beautiful, sunny day,” Brenda says. “We loved all the light that came in” when they walked through a Drayton home.
“We love the layout and the private spaces,” Brenda says. Both Tommy and Brenda have their own home-offices, and they opted for a relaxing alcove in the master bedroom, instead of a second closet.
“The house has tremendous storage,” Tommy says. “The way it is laid out, it’s all very usable. So we didn’t mind sacrificing that extra closet for the sitting room.”
While choosing the features for their home, Tommy and Brenda decided to install a tankless water heater and other energy-saving devices. “Steve (Romeyn) helped us facilitate all of that,” Tommy says. “The homes are already energy efficient – all of our windows are Low-E3 with Argon, and the heating and air is 95 percent efficient. But they came up with creative solutions for our needs. Our tankless water heater – we love it!”
“At our old house, you couldn’t run the dishwasher, washing machine and shower at the same time,” Brenda adds. “Now, we can run all three all day long and not run out of hot water!”
Skylights in the master bathroom are another of their favorite features. “On a sunny day, you almost have to check to see if you’ve left the lights on,” Brenda says.
Their home also has a beautiful view of the woods, which they discovered while walking the lots prior to construction. Trees and plenty of green space – as well as birds and other wildlife – are enjoyed from the master bedroom, dining room and sunroom windows. “Friends come over and say, ‘I really like your view!’” Tommy says.
The couple also enjoys their front porch. “I like the old-time feeling,” Tommy says. “We sit on the front porch and talk and visit. And it’s a smaller community – just the perfect size so you get to know everyone.”
