With the heat outside becoming unbearable, the best air-conditioned haven this week is a production of the much-loved musical Hairspray, running through August 8. Just 20 minutes down the road from Windsong’s active adult communities, you’ll find the most lively, entertaining production in town, put on by the always professional Atlanta Lyric Theatre.
Set in 1962, boomers will love—and maybe also relate to—this tale of a Baltimore girl who dreams of dancing on TV’s most popular show. Her big dreams and even bigger bouffant hair are part of the Tony Award winning comedic musical based on John Waters’ classic film from the ‘80s. But the costumes and music are decidedly ‘60s-inspired.
In the midst of the sing-along songs and crazy clothes, it’s easy to get swept away to reminiscing about those good old days, and Hairspray is the perfect opportunity to expose your grandkids to a show about the past that’s still fully entertaining and relevant today. And who could pass up the chance to giggle at those crazy hairdos once again?
The musical’s setting also makes for a perfect evening date for two or with a group of girlfriends. At the newly renovated Earl Smith Strand Theatre in downtown Marietta’s historic square, there are seemingly limitless nosh options. Enjoy a pre-theatre dinner at Blu Greek Taverna or La Famiglia Ristorante, or visit Sugar Cakes Patisserie or Cupcake Charm for a colorful sweet treat afterward.
Just beware: even if the bouffants in Hairspray bring back sweet memories, that era is long gone, so avoid the salon right after seeing the show!
